Lanzarote is part of the Canary Islands and as it\u2019s the easternmost, it\u00a0gets some protection from the Atlantic weather. This means a warm\u00a0climate year round, minimal rain and less wind than some of the other\u00a0islands. It\u2019s a perfect for a spot of sunshine any time of the year but\u00a0especially so during September and October when the crowds have\u00a0gone.<\/h4>\n

With that in mind, we\u2019ve decided to focus on the beautiful island of\u00a0Lanzarote for this month\u2019s \u201824 Hours in\u2026\u2019 feature.<\/h4>\n

Morning<\/h3>\n

After a traditional breakfast we always recommend a morning swim,\u00a0either in your hotel swimming pool or, even better, in the sea. In fact,\u00a0Playa de Papagayo at the very south-western tip is a collection of the\u00a0finest beaches in Lanzarote. A series of hidden coves with white sand\u00a0beaches, large cliffs and turquoise water; it really is the perfect spot for\u00a0a swim.<\/h4>\n

If you\u2019re there in the off-season it won\u2019t be a problem but it\u2019s worth\u00a0getting to Playa de Papagayo in the morning, before the crowds arrive.\u00a0The beaches are easily accessible from all over the island by road and\u00a0there is ample parking.<\/h4>\n

Lunch<\/h3>\n

Lanzarote is a foodie\u2019s paradise, especially if you\u2019re partial to seafood.\u00a0As you\u2019d expect for an island, there are copious amounts of incredible\u00a0and fresh seafood available at almost every restaurant. Common (and\u00a0delicious) fish include dorada (sea bream), cherne (sea bass) and vieja\u00a0(parrot fish). These are usually served grilled with papas arrugadas, the\u00a0signature of Lanzarote.<\/h4>\n

\"Papas<\/h4>\n

Literally translated as \u2018wrinkled potatoes\u2019, they are served with a rich\u00a0sauce of olive oil, vinegar, garlic, herbs and spices.<\/h4>\n

Afternoon<\/h3>\n

In the afternoon we recommend traveling north to the Chinijo\u00a0Archipelago. This collection of small islands is easily accessible by boat\u00a0and is part of a natural park. It\u2019s perfect for walking, sailing and bird\u00a0watching.<\/h4>\n

While you\u2019re in the north, head to La Corona and the Cueve de los\u00a0Verdes. This cave was created by lava flows from Monte Corona.\u00a0Nowadays, the several kilometres of caves are lit up and can be\u00a0explored. Its most famous feature is a 5000-seat concert hall located\u00a0near the entrance, which is home to various performances throughout\u00a0the year.<\/h4>\n

\"Entrance<\/h4>\n

Evening<\/h3>\n

In the evening it\u2019s time to head back to town and enjoy an evening\u00a0meal and watch the sun go down. The best sunsets are along the west\u00a0of the island where you can watch out over the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0However, we recommend making your way to the old town of Puerto\u00a0del Carmen.<\/h4>\n

Here you\u2019ll find lots of bars and restaurants to spend the night and\u00a0relax with a traditional Spanish feel. For those of you that like late\u00a0nights and something a bit livelier, Puerto del Carmen is the ideal\u00a0place. The strip is where you\u2019ll find all the big clubs and lively bars that\u00a0stay open well into the early hours. Matagorda is somewhere in the\u00a0middle and certainly offers a lively night out.<\/h4>\n
