Literally translated\u00a0as \u2018rancher\u2019s eggs,\u2019 this dish contains chilli, tomatoes, cheese and occasionally\u00a0refried beans.<\/p>\n
Morning.\u00a0<\/strong>We all love a morning swim (who doesn\u2019t?) but in this fantastic area of Mexico you\u00a0can go for a swim like no other. Playa del Carmen is famous around the globe for\u00a0its cenotes (sen-oh-tays). These limestone sinkholes were a central part of Mayan\u00a0culture and nowadays provide divers and snorkelers with some of the clearest\u00a0water you\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0Diving into a cenote and being part of the unique underwater world is an\u00a0experience you\u2019ll never forget. If you just plan on snorkeling, then the fairly shallow\u00a0Cenote Azul is our recommendation as you can get up close to the fish and the\u00a0stunning rock formations.\u00a0If you can scuba dive then the flooded cave system of Sistema Dos Ojos (\u201cthe\u00a0system of two eyes\u201d) simply MUST be at the top of your list. While snorkelers can\u00a0still appreciate the sheer majesty of it, divers are able to make the most of the upto-10m depths.<\/p>\n Other notable cenotes include the Cenote Jardin del Eden (\u201cGarden of Eden\u201d) and\u00a0Sistema Sac Actun (the \u201cWhite Cave System\u201d). There are many diving tour\u00a0operators in Playa del Carmen and BlueBay hotel staff will be able to recommend\u00a0one.<\/p>\n Lunch. \u00a0<\/strong>After a morning swim, it\u2019s time to refill the tank, and you\u2019re certainly in the right\u00a0place for that! There are countless fantastic restaurants in Playa del Carmen to\u00a0cater for all tastes, but we recommend 500 Gramos Grill on 5th Avenue. This\u00a0fantastic, family-run restaurant specialises in steak (we recommend the T-bone)\u00a0but have no fear, there are plenty of vegetarian options available, too.<\/p>\n Other places to consider trying are Falafel Nessya, on Street 4, for some truly\u00a0outstanding Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food, Mr. Dog Del Caribe for juicy\u00a0burgers and hot dogs, and if you just want a quick snack then no trip to Mexico is\u00a0complete without trying tamales from a street vendor.\u00a0This traditional Mesoamerican food is made from a corn-based dough containing a\u00a0variety of ingredients, including cheese, fruits, veg, chilies and meats, which is then\u00a0steamed inside a banana leaf.\u00a0Being so close to the sea, Playa del Carmen is a seafood-lover\u2019s paradise. Many\u00a0restaurants offer a wide selection of the ocean\u2019s finest, but Pave Real by the Sea is one of the best restaurants in the whole area. Located on the beach roughly 15km\u00a0north of Playa del Carmen, this is a restaurant that\u2019s worth the journey alone.<\/p>\n Afternoon.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Now you\u2019re fully fed and relaxed, it\u2019s time to explore everything the town of Playa\u00a0del Carmen has to offer. 5th Avenue is the main shopping area and while you can\u00a0take guided tours, we much prefer to simply walk along the avenue and take in the\u00a0vibe. Playa del Carmen is unique in that it has never lost its relaxed, bohemian vibe\u00a0and that can be seen on Quinta Avenida. Everything from clothes through\u00a0watersports gear to art can be found here.<\/p>\n It\u2019s best to stay in and around 5th avenue until at least the late afternoon and early\u00a0evening. This is when bars start to open, the atmosphere picks up and people start\u00a0to let their hair down. Now\u2019s the perfect time to make your way to the seafront and\u00a0enjoy a cocktail or a beer as the sun goes down.<\/p>\n Nighttime.\u00a0<\/strong>This is where Playa del Carmen comes to life. Although certainly quieter than\u00a0neighboring Cancun, there is still more than enough to keep night owls going well\u00a0into the early hours.\u00a0Consider starting at the famous Mamita\u2019s Beach Club. Although it\u2019s an unashamed\u00a0tourist trap, it\u2019s certainly one of the best places to get in the mood while\u00a0surrounded by young people who want to make the most of their holidays. If you\u00a0prefer a calmer and more chilled atmosphere then make your way to San\u00a0Mezcalito on 5th Avenue. Try some of Mexico\u2019s finest Mezcal (obviously) and relax in\u00a0authentic surroundings.<\/p>\n Moving on into the night, the Deseo Lounge is a slightly hidden but high-end bar\u00a0that offers a huge range of drinks, plenty of lounging areas and an upscale party\u00a0atmosphere. Oh, and it has a swimming pool.\u00a0If you\u2019re one of those people who really likes to stay out late then La Santanera is\u00a0your kind of establishment. When other bars are winding down, this place is just\u00a0limbering up. With 3 separate floors of different music and some of the best DJs in\u00a0the area, this is where you\u2019ll find the party.<\/p>\n To Recover. \u00a0<\/strong>After a day like that you deserve to relax. If there\u2019s one thing that Playa Del Carmen\u00a0and the Riviera Maya is famous for, it\u2019s the beaches. Of course, some of them can\u00a0get crowded, especially in high season. If you want to relax like a local then you\u00a0need to go the \u2018secret beach\u2019 between the Paradisus and Marazul hotel complexes.<\/p>\n Located about 30mins walk north from the main town, this beach is popular with\u00a0locals and really gives you the chance to feel like you\u2019re in Mexico. The cenote runoff\u00a0even creates a nice little river to bathe in. This beach can get busy on Saturday\u00a0and Sunday afternoons, but if you can go on a weekday before 4pm, you\u2019ll have\u00a0your own slice of paradise.\u00a0So there you have it, the perfect way to spend 24 hours (and a bit more) in\u00a0Caribbean paradise.
